MMS Place 13th at Odyssey of the Mind World Finals!!
The Marietta Middle School 8th graders earned their spot in the Georgia delegation to World Finals by finishing first at the regional tournament in Lilburn, Georgia followed by a second place finish at the state tournament held at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. The team is undefeated in the Spontaneous Category this year, finishing in first place at both regional and state tournaments and then again at World Finals.
The MMS’s Odyssey of the Mind team placed 13th overall at World Finals in Division II of Problem I: No Cycle Recycle. Team members Abby Jacobs, Emily Howard, David Rubury, Kyle Brown and Marcos Rios joined teams from across the world – Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. These MMS students were given a problem they had never seen before and they had to solve it in the time allowed. The team designed a trash-collecting robot that roamed the universe with his ditzy alien companion in their flying saucer collecting discarded items to repurpose into useful new things.
Odyssey of the Mind World Finals was about more than the competition. Camaraderie between competing teams is encouraged as team members interact with each other to trade pins, practice their foreign language skills, or just hang out and talk about what it is like to be a kid in their respective countries. Odyssey of the Mind is a remarkable program, and the experience of World Finals is one that our Marietta Middle School team will remember for a lifetime.
