The Adeline D’Amelio Scholarship was founded by the D’Amelio family to honor the memory of Mrs. D’Amelio. Adeline Smith was born in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1898. She subsequently moved to Milford, MA because her father went to work in a nearby hospital. She graduated from Milford Hospital Nursing School in 1925 and worked as a nurse for 25 cents an hour. Later in 1925 she married Guy D’Amelio. They had two children: Guy Robert (a teacher) and Barbara, who also graduated from Milford Hospital as a registered nurse.

For nearly sixty years Guy and Adeline enjoyed togetherness. They moved to Florida in 1948 and traveled extensively until her husband died. She moved to Marietta, GA to live with her son and his wife. Adeline passed away in 1991 just before her 93rd birthday. At her wish, her ashes were strewn over the Atlantic Ocean.

Having made her career as a dedicated and caring nurse, Adeline’s son, Guy D’Amelio, established this scholarship fund in memory of his mother, Adeline D’Amelio. The annual scholarship is awarded to Marietta High School graduates who wish to pursue a career in nursing or other areas of the medical profession. Candidates must possess strong academics, leadership, and community service.
